Private URLs for unpublished datasets

The ASU Research Data Repository only supports publicly available dataset files. This functionality should only be used for temporary sharing while a dataset is being prepared for publication. Unpublished datasets in the Repository for more than 12 months may be removed.

Creating a Private URL allows you to share your dataset (for viewing and downloading files) and provide a data availability statement before it is openly published. For example, you can provide a DOI for a data availability statement while your dataset is still unpublished.  Anyone who receives the Private URL will be able to view the dataset.

Create a Private URL

  • From the dataset's web page, select Edit → Private URL.

  • In the popup window, click Create Private URL. The URL that appears can be shared with trusted users to provide access to the dataset without requiring them to log in to the repository. Click Close to complete the process.

  • You may turn off the Private URL anytime by navigating to the Private URL management popup and clicking Disable Private URL.

  • Private URLs are disabled when a dataset is published.

Remember to publish your dataset by the publication date of your paper. Otherwise, readers of your journal paper who click the DOI in your data availability statement will experience a broken link.

The DOI will stay the same when you publish the dataset.

Private URLs share your names and institutional affiliations, so please use them cautiously if you are in a blind peer review process. Always consult with your journal on their guidelines for data availability statements and their peer review process.
