Edit a Dataset

  1. From the main dashboard or from within a dataverse, click on the name of the dataset to edit.

  2. Click the down arrow on the Edit Dataset button. A short menu will display giving editing options.

  1. Click the Metadata link from the Edit Dataset menu.

  2. Fill in the detailed metadata for your dataset. If you would like to add an additional option to one of the sections, click the “+” sign.

  3. When complete, click Save Changes.

The Description field allows certain HTML tags for readability and to add links in the text.

Metadata options

When adding or editing dataset metadata provide as much information as possible about your dataset. Connect to published articles, presentations, and reports by adding related publications the dataset supports to your record. Dataverse also provides file metadata options. The Search this dataset box in a dataset record searches file names, file descriptions, and file tags. Search facets help users filter a dataset’s files by file type, access level, and file tags.

Edit Terms

  1. Click the Terms link from the Edit Dataset menu.

  2. By default CC0 1.0 Public Domain dedication is selected.


    Alternatively using the drop down menu you can choose CC BY 4.0, or choose Custom Dataset Terms and write in your own declaration.

  3. Optional: Fill in each of the Terms of Use sections that you would like to include with your dataset.

  4. Fill in each of the Terms of Access sections that you would like to include with your dataset. You can also check the box to have users request access to restricted files.

  5. If there are guestbooks enabled in the parent dataverse, choose a guestbook that you would like to include with your dataset.

  6. Click Save Changes.

Suggested Readings

Assigning a license takes some thought as they are nuanced and you cannot claim a copyright on all data particularly if your data are statements of fact. Add Thumbnails or Widgets

  1. Click the Thumbnails + Widgets link from the Edit Dataset menu.

  2. Click the Thumbnail tab to upload an image to be the thumbnail image for your dataset. Choose an image from your computer to upload. Note the image should be no larger than 500KB with a max display size of 48x48 px. Click Save Changes when complete.

  3. Click the Widgets tab to copy code that you can use to embed a widget for your dataset citation or dataset to another web page. Click Done when complete.
